Yokohama Geisha performance at Kuraki Noh Stage
Yokohama Geisha

A lucky group of guests was treated to a remarkable entertainment program in Kuraki Park, Yokohama. The evening commenced with a garden cocktail party, where a selection of delightful canapés was served alongside the Yokohama, a classic cocktail originating around the turn of the century. In the meantime, a musical trio for the geisha show performed instrumental pieces as dusk fell on the park. Soon after, guests retired to the Kuraki Noh Stage for the main geisha performance and a superb kaiseki bento dinner. As the show unfolded, diners enjoyed a second signature cocktail, the Bamboo, a 19th century libation fashioned at the Grand Hotel Yokohama. Much like the Kuraki stage itself, which incorporates elements from older historical structures, these performances showcased an elegant and deeply impressive synthesis of tradition and modern innovations. From the Lion Dance and the Noge Mountain Song to the comic relief of the Yakko Dakko kite flying and Ebisu God’s fishing caper, the performances showcased the full range of the geisha performers’ skills in dancing, acting, and musicality. To cap off a truly enchanting night, teams of guests engaged in a quiz game, guessing the meanings of drum and musical motifs from classical Japanese theater. It was truly a rare opportunity for an intimate and multifaceted experience of Japan’s living cultural heritage, and a memorable time was had by all the participants.
